Kinda funny, once

Posted : 16 years ago on 28 February 2008 06:58 (A review of The Master of Disguise)

First off, Dana Carvey was funny in Wayne's World and SNL and is a great impressionists.
That being said, this is only slightly funny the first time through but fart jokes only are funny once.
Carvey plays Pistachio Disguisey, a somewhat off guy that turns out to be from a family with supernatural skills of disguise. Well his parents are kidnapped and must learn to become a master of disguise to save them.
In whole most of Carvey's characters that he disguises as are really bad and a lot of the funny jokes are fart joke really.
I wouldn't suggest seeing this movie but if felt compelled to, I guarantee it won't be rememberable.

Typical 80's movie

Posted : 16 years ago on 27 February 2008 09:28 (A review of Over the Top)

See one 80's movie, you've probably seen them all.
Well Over The Top is a movie from the 80's that followed every 80's before it.
Sylvester Stallone plays a trucker/arm wrestler that left his wife and son years before and comes into his estranged son's life when his wife in near death. They both head on a journey and split half way through and the kid figures that he loves his father and all this while Stallone's character is preparing for the arm wrestling championship in Vegas.
Acting is sub par compared to anything dramatic but is good enough to entertain.
The soundtrack is filled with crappy pop music that filled all movies of the time which could be a bad thing but wasn't a issue here.
Overall its a entertaining movie to see once but don't really a movie to see over and over again.

Good thriller done in a interesting way

Posted : 16 years ago on 26 February 2008 07:01 (A review of Memento)

When I first saw the trailer for this movie back when it came out I thought the movie premiss was interesting.
Now that I've seen it I would have to say that that premiss was fulfilled.
Basically, as Prelude said, the story is done backwards where you see the end of the story first and the beginning last. It's a interesting approach that was done before in Irreversible but fits the whole movie.
Guy Pearce plays a man who is trying find the man who raped and killed his wife and left him with only short term memory unable to commit any new memories to long term memory. Beginning at the end is interesting concept as the audience knows what's the conclusion is but now have to watch and see how Guy Pearce's character reached that conclusion.
Acting by Guy Pearce was wonderful and also Joe Pantoliano did a great job as both brought their characters to life.
Sound was solid across the board with great fitting music that didn't force emotions or preempt what was coming next.
In whole Memento is a good thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed and a must see for all movie buffs.

Good Britsh comedy

Posted : 16 years ago on 25 February 2008 07:31 (A review of Mr. Bean's Holiday)

It seems like most comedies coming out these days are either really stupid parodies of real movies, like Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie, or more adult humor oriented that sometimes are in totally bad taste.
But along comes Mr. Bean.
I've yet to see the show and have only seen Mr. Bean in action once in his previous movie and having also seen Johnny English, which Rowan Atkinson is also in, I kinda knew what was coming before I watched it.
And I have to say that more comedies should be like Mr. Bean's Holiday.
Story wise it was cute as Mr. Bean wins a holiday to Cannes, France and how he gets there while he causes so much damage along the way.
Comedic elements are also cute and doesn't need to be interpreted by a adult mind to get the jokes so it's a good movie for younger audience.
Acting by both Rowan Atkinson and by the boy, played by Max Baldry, in the film is great and both compliment each other as a half functioning adult and fully functioning child.
Music wise the soundtrack in solid and adds perfectly to the film.
All in all Mr. Bean's Holiday it a solid family friendly comedy and should be enjoyed by anyone who watches it.

Not my kind of musical

Posted : 16 years ago on 25 February 2008 06:51 (A review of Across the Universe)

I know that the Beatles are loved by many and I do like some of their music but when I heard that Across The Universe was really about telling a story using only Beatles songs I wasn't really interested.
But my sister bought the DVD and some of my friends had really liked it, I said "meh" and watched it.
Now that I've seen it, I really don't know what's so special about it.
The story isn't that interesting even if it was showing the changes that were going on around the Vietnam war which I really disagree with but that isn't important in my review.
The music was nice but again I'm not a Beatles fan so I didn't really care.
The acting was nice and it's what saved the movie for getting a 2.
What really killed the movie for me was the mid part of the movie when all the "psychedelic" imagining and really ruined the rest of the movie.
I've seen other musicals and do like some of them and proudly say that I do like them even if it me look less manly but this musical is one that I don't like and don't plan on watching ever again.

Terrible

Posted : 16 years ago on 25 February 2008 06:26 (A review of Ultraviolet)

I've was told from plenty of people that Ultraviolet was a terrible movie and after watching I would have to agree.
The writing was bad with little story that really wasn't interesting.
The acting was bad as no one felt real and spoke crappy dialog.
Action scenes felt dry and uninteresting also.
Music was bad techno music that felt forced.
Now I've heard that the director of this directed Equilibrium which I've been wanting to see and it's suppose to be good and I hope it is because this movie says to me that the director can't direct.

Better Tetris and now portable

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 2 February 2008 10:58 (A review of Super Puzzle Fighter II)

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a great game on the consoles and arcades which took Tetris and threw in some cool graphics, Capcom Street Fighter characters, and tweaked some of the core gameplay mechanics and became a even more addicting game. Well Super Puzzle Fighter II for the GBA take all that and puts it in a portable form.
In Tetris blocks fall and when the player makes a line of blocks that line disappears but in Puzzle Fighter gems are dropped and can be built up to make bigger gems until the player can drop crash gem which destroys the gem and send a attack of counter gems to the opponent who is trying to do the same.
Players can pick some of their favorite Street Fighter characters which each have different drop patterns for counter gems.
Sound is the same as the original.
Graphic on the this version seems to be better then on the PSX giving the game a even brighter feeling.
In the end taking Puzzle Fighter and putting in a portable version makes this version even better.

Tetris but better

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 2 February 2008 10:51 (A review of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo)

Back in the 80's the most played game was Tetris. Well Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo takes Tetris throws in some cool graphics, Capcom Street Fighter characters, and tweaks some of the core gameplay mechanics and become a even more addicting game.
Sound is great with all the sounds and music from Street Fighter making it really feel like a true Capcom fighter.
And graphic are a real treat as the blocks are nice and bright and the characters are miniature and cute versions of their Street Fighter counterparts.
At the time Tetris was the most addicting game out and while it's still addicting today I find Puzzle Fighter so much better.

WarGames the game

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 2 February 2008 10:29 (A review of DEFCON)

As a geek one of my favorite movies is WarGames where a hacker breaks into a military computer and starts playing a game of global thermal nuclear war with a advanced AI computer that the computer later trys to make real.
Well DEFCON is that game.
The game was a really simple premise pick a side at the start and progress through the defcon levels setting up for when defcon 1 is reached and nuclear fallout begins.
Defcon 5 is were players start setting up radar, bases, silos, airfields, and the naval fleet. Defcon 4 the radar starts to work. At Defcon 3 players can't build anymore but by then they should be trying to explore a little with the navy and find out the best places to attack when Defcon 1 is reached and players can finally deploy nukes. Single player Defcon gets really old fast but playing multiplayer can be really fun as players can make alliances with friends and attack their enemies together or turn on one another in the midst of conflict.
Multiplayer also has some great alternatives to play like Office mode where the game is played in real time so it can take 6+ hours to finish and also if the player need to hide the game from the boss they just need to press Esc and the game is minimized and a word document is opened. Speed mode is what is sounds like as the game can finish in under 30 minutes and Diplomacy mode is where all players are on the same team and can see everything until one breaks off and attacks.
Graphics are minimal but really stylish in bringing a real life WarGame game.
Sound is really simple and subtle that is makes you feel like the player isn't really playing game but playing real nuclear war.
Overall the game is really good and can be found for under $20 some places so it's also a great buy.

Great hyper realistic game

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 2 February 2008 09:47 (A review of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)

I'm a big CoD fan and found the first and second game great experiences and when I heard that CoD 3 were console only I was bummed but now that I found out it wasn't developed by Infinity Ward and this is what they were working on I'm okay with it.
The main reason that I enjoy the CoD games is the single player story and while CoD4's is a little short I still found it throughly enjoyable and ended spectacularly.
Gameplay is a really solid while on rails but still feels big enough that I didn't feel too constricted. Every rifle, pistol, grenade, and other weapons feeling like I'm really shooting them. AI didn't fell dumb and gave me a nice challenge.
Sound wise in respects to voice overs, effects, and music it is top notch with everything sounding as it should.
Graphics are what every AAA title is today, awesome.
Now I know some people are put off because of the settings of the game because of the operations in Iraq and terrorism but I think they should get over it and play this awesome game.
